CHL ANNOUNCES 2010-11 PLAYOFF FORMAT

The Quad City Mallards will play 66 games during the 2010-11 regular season, the Mallards’ first in the Central Hockey League, the team announced today in conjunction with the CHL.  It was also announced that 16 of the league’s 18 teams will qualify for the CHL President’s Cup Playoffs.

The CHL’s regular season will will run from Friday, October 15 through Sunday, March 27 with the post-season starting the week of March 28.  The Mallards’ are slated to play their first ever CHL home game on Saturday night, October 16 at 7:00 p.m.

The top eight teams from each of the league’s two nine-team conferences will qualify for the playoffs.  The top seed in each conference will play the eighth seed in that conference, the second seed will face the seventh seed, the third seed will square off against the sixth seed and the fourth and fifth seeds will play each other.  Brackets will remain constant throughout the playoffs; no re-seeding will take place.

Yesterday saw the CHL announce that the Northern Conference will be comprised of Quad City along with Bloomington, Colorado, Dayton, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Missouri, Rapid City and Wichita while Allen, Arizona, Bossier-Shreveport, Laredo, Mississippi, Odessa, Rio Grande Valley, Texas and Tulsa will fill out the South.

The first two rounds of the post-season will feature best-of-five series while the conference and league finals will both be best-of-seven battles.  As in earlier rounds, home ice advantage in the finals will go to the team taking part in the series that accumulated the most regular season points.
